What is “The Layover?”

The Layover is written by me, David Slotnick, an airline business journalist, photographer, part-time EMT (and paramedic student), and most exciting, dad. It may surprise you to learn that I’m usually very tired.

A layover is also, incidentally, a chance to enjoy a bonus part of a trip, especially if it’s a long one and you can take some time to head into town and get a taste of a brand new place. It can simultaneously be the longest, most annoying purgatorial part of a journey, and you’re probably in Atlanta. There’s a vague metaphor in there, maybe. Or “The Layover” just sounded good and hadn’t been taken yet. Could be both.

For now, this is partly a placeholder. My current idea is to build it as a place for me to share some behind-the-scenes looks at the process behind certain stories, plus analysis and commentary that informs my fulltime reporting. And, maybe eventually, to write more broadly than I do during the day, maybe about other topics. Basically Twitter crossed with the blogs of yesteryear. But that all may change.

What do you want to read?

Right now, this is a dynamic space. So what would you like to read? Can I answer questions that you have? Is there something in my normal airline reporting that you’d like to learn more about? Would you like to know more about how I integrate photography into my work? What kinds of tools I use in the field? My thoughts on the experience of modern fatherhood? My favorite episode of The Simpsons? Something else?

Please let me know, and help me decide what to build on this space!

Why subscribe?

I get a tremendous amount of spam, newsletters, and unnecessary alerts, to the point that my inboxes — work, personal, and personal-professional — are all but unmanageable. So I get it — I’m asking you to subscribe to another email list; Why would you do that?

I feel the same way every time I subscribe to a newsletter.

So: If you subscribe to The Layover, I promise I won’t waste your time, nor your bandwidth for dealing with your inbox.

I won’t write or send email blasts just for the sake of writing or emailing, but only when I have something that I think is worth writing (or reading).
